Barn mini split installation.

Updated September 2026

A detached barn in Central Texas is not just another room. It sits 20 to 100 feet from the house, so the refrigerant line set has to stretch farther than a typical garage or bedroom install. That extra length adds friction, which can reduce efficiency if the system is not sized or charged correctly. ATX Mini Split King includes the first 50 feet of line set in the $1,500 flat price, and we always tell you up front if your run will need an extended charge or a larger unit before we start work.

Every install is wired to code by our TDLR-licensed contractor. Long line-set runs, panel upgrades or unusual mounting can add cost, and we tell you up front, before any work starts. For market context, see our Austin mini split cost guide: typical Central Texas quotes run $3,000 to $5,000 for a single zone.

Why a barn mini split needs a different approach

A detached barn in Central Texas is not just another room. It sits 20 to 100 feet from the house, so the refrigerant line set has to stretch farther than a typical garage or bedroom install. That extra length adds friction, which can reduce efficiency if the system is not sized or charged correctly. ATX Mini Split King includes the first 50 feet of line set in the $1,500 flat price, and we always tell you up front if your run will need an extended charge or a larger unit before we start work.

Electrical access is the second big difference. Many barns share a subpanel with the main house, but some need their own service drop. If your barn is already wired for lights and outlets, we can tap into that circuit if it has enough capacity. If not, we will tell you exactly what a panel upgrade or new meter will cost before we schedule the install, so there are no surprises on installation day.

What’s included in a $1,500 barn mini split install

The $1,500 flat price covers one indoor wall unit, one outdoor condenser, up to 50 feet of pre-insulated line set, mounting brackets, and all labor. We run a vacuum pump to remove moisture and air from the lines, then test the system for cooling and heating before we leave. If the barn has bare drywall or wood, we will pick up a quart of matching paint from Home Depot and touch up the wall around the indoor unit at no extra charge.

Most barn installs finish in a single day. We arrive between 8 and 9 a.m., mount the units, run the line set through a small hole in the wall, connect the electrical, and commission the system. Because barns are often used for animals, tools, or workshops, we make sure the thermostat is placed where it won’t get bumped or covered with dust. If you need a second or third zone for a tack room or office space, the flat price jumps to $2,500 or $3,500, but the same no-surprise rules apply.

Questions

How long can the line set run before it costs extra?

The $1,500 flat price includes up to 50 feet of pre-insulated line set. If your barn is farther than that, we will add the cost of extra line and refrigerant before the job starts. Most barns in Austin and Central Texas stay within the included length.

Can the mini split heat the barn in winter?

Yes. Mini splits are heat pumps, so they provide both cooling and heating. In Central Texas winters, they keep a barn above freezing without a separate furnace. If you store sensitive items or animals, the system can maintain a steady 50 to 60 degrees even when outdoor temps drop into the 30s.

Do I need a permit for a barn mini split in Austin?

In most Central Texas jurisdictions, a permit is required for any permanent HVAC installation. ATX Mini Split King handles the permit paperwork and inspection scheduling as part of the flat price. We pull the permit before the install day, so you don’t have to visit the city office yourself.

We install across Central Texas. See the Austin mini split cost guide, full Central Texas service area or casitas and ADUs.
