What to know about preparing a garage for a mini split installation.

Before the crew arrives the garage should have its walls and ceiling finished at least to the point where the mini split indoor unit can be mounted securely. If the garage still has an uninsulated overhead door that will remain, consider adding a insulated door kit or a separate wall to separate the living space from the garage bay. Our installers handle the mini split electrical hookup that is standard for the unit but if the house needs a panel upgrade that is a separate job you will need an electrician for that. We can tell you honestly if the existing panel can handle the new load.

Our TDLR licensed contractors typically finish a 1 to 3 zone install in a single day. We test the system before leaving so you know it works. For a garage conversion we often mount the outdoor unit on a concrete pad or wall bracket outside the garage wall. The indoor unit goes on an interior wall or ceiling. We run the line set through a small hole drilled through the exterior wall. If the run is very long, we will quote that before starting. The system is ductless so no demolition of existing ductwork or insulation work is required from us just the mini split and its standard electrical connection.

Can a mini split adequately cool a garage converted into a home gym in the Austin summer?

Yes. A properly sized ductless mini split heat pump can handle the heat load of a garage gym even in 100 degree weather. We recommend a 1.5 ton or 2 ton unit depending on square footage and ceiling height. Our installers can advise on the right capacity before you book.

Do I need to finish the garage walls and ceiling before the mini split installation?

It is not required but it is highly recommended. The indoor unit needs a solid mounting surface. If the garage is still bare studs and open rafters, we can still mount the unit but the finished look and insulation performance will be better if drywall is up first. We can work around most conditions but we will tell you if an unusual mounting situation adds cost.

Does your flat rate cover the electrical work needed for a garage conversion mini split?

Our flat rate includes a standard electrical hookup meaning we connect the mini split to the existing electrical panel if it has capacity and is within 50 feet. If the panel needs an upgrade or a new subpanel is required, that is a separate job you will need an electrician for. We can tell you if the existing setup is adequate before we start.
