Sizing and What Affects Pricing
We charge flat rates based on zones, not unit size, because most standard garages (up to 600 sq. ft.) take a single 12,000–18,000 BTU head—our $1,500 one-zone price. Two zones cover larger garages or a garage plus adjacent room for $2,500, and three zones handle a workshop, gym, and car bay for $3,500. Variables that can add cost: longer line sets (over 50 feet), non-standard electrical work (panel upgrade or subpanel), or challenging condenser placement (second floor or roof). Questions
Will the mini split keep up with an uninsulated garage door?
Yes—if sized correctly. We match the unit’s BTU output to your garage’s square footage, ceiling height, and solar exposure. An uninsulated metal door adds heat gain, so we typically bump to a 15,000–18,000 BTU single-head system for a two-car garage. That’s still within the $1,500 one-zone price. The unit runs longer cycles to maintain temperature, but it stays efficient because mini splits vary their fan speed and compressor output.
Do I need to add insulation or upgrade my electrical panel first?
No. The mini split works fine without adding insulation—it just runs more often. We do recommend sealing gaps around the garage door if you notice drafts, but that’s optional. For electrical, a mini split typically needs a 15- or 20-amp dedicated circuit. If your panel has room for a new breaker, we wire it directly. If your panel is full, we’ll quote a subpanel or tandem breaker before install. Most garages in homes built after 1990 have the capacity.
What about loud gym equipment or sawdust in a workshop?
Mini splits are designed for continuous use and handle moderate dust and vibration. For a garage gym, the indoor head is wall-mounted away from drop zones—slamming weights or dropping barbells won’t damage it if mounted at least 12 inches off the floor. For a workshop, fine sawdust can clog the drain line and evaporator fins if the unit runs during heavy sanding. We suggest turning it off or using a dust-collection system during high-dust activities, and cleaning the filter monthly. Otherwise, these units last 10–15 years in garage environments.
