Why Ductwork Fights A Historic Home

In a house built before central air, rooms were placed to catch cross breezes, and windows, transoms and porch overhangs handled summer heat. Walls may be solid masonry or heavy plaster over wood lath, with baseboards and trim that are part of the home's character. Running a conventional ducted system through that layout means opening walls, lowering ceilings or building soffits, and every chase cut through old framing takes a toll on the structure and finishes.

A ductless mini split avoids that surgery. A small outdoor unit connects to a slim indoor head by a refrigerant line set that passes through a modest wall opening, not a network of ducts.
