Those are materials and labor together, wired to code by a TDLR licensed contractor. Anything non standard gets quoted first, before a single tool comes out of the truck: a very long line set, an electrical panel that needs work, a difficult mount, a roof or masonry penetration, disposal of the old equipment. You hear the number before we start, not after.

What usually brings a homeowner to this page

In Central Texas the summers run long and hot, so a space that used to feel comfortable in July now stays warm even when the unit runs for hours. Sometimes the compressor outside cycles on and off in short bursts instead of settling into a steady run. That pattern is called short cycling. It can come from a refrigerant issue, a sensor, or simply age. The sound may also have changed. A unit that once ran quietly now rattles, hums, or clicks in a way that is hard to ignore, especially at night in an addition or a converted garage.

Age is another common reason. Many ductless systems in older Austin houses, garage conversions, and room additions have been in place for years. Parts wear. Filters clog if they are not cleaned. If the outdoor unit and indoor head are only a few years old, the line set is sound, and the electrical is already correctly sized, paying for a targeted repair keeps the existing Haier equipment in place. Replacement starts to make sense when multiple parts are failing at once, when the indoor head is in the wrong place for how the room is used now, or when the electrical and line set would need major work anyway. Older housing in Austin often has undersized circuits or a disconnect that no longer meets code. A converted garage may have a wall penetration that is poorly sealed or a condensate route that dumps water where it should not. If a repair quote is already high and those other items would still need attention, a full swap can be cleaner. What carries over and what does not

Some pieces of the old installation can stay. The outdoor pad is often reusable if it is level, large enough, and not cracked. We check that the new condenser sits stably and that airflow around it is not blocked by fences or plants that have grown in. The wall penetration, the hole through brick, siding, or the garage wall, can frequently be reused if it is the right diameter and height. We sleeve it and seal it again so rain and insects stay out. In older Austin houses the original hole may be too high or too low for a better head placement, in which case we patch the old opening and cut a new one.

The line set, the copper pipes that carry refrigerant between indoor and outdoor, is the item most often replaced. Flare connections age. Insulation on the suction line cracks in the sun. Oil residue and the old refrigerant type may not match the new equipment. We recover the old charge, cut out the lines, and run new insulated copper with proper traps and supports. Reusing a line set is possible only when it is the correct size, in good condition, and we can verify it is clean and dry. That judgment happens on site, not from a photo. The disconnect and the circuit are electrical items. If the breaker, wire gauge, and disconnect already meet code for the new condenser, they stay. If the run is undersized or the disconnect is rusty and fused, we pull a new circuit as part of the electrical work we are licensed to do.

The mounting bracket for the indoor head is usually replaced. New heads have different mounting patterns and weights. We install a level bracket into studs or use proper anchors in masonry. The condensate route, the drain from the indoor coil, is checked for slope and discharge point. Gravity drains that already fall to a proper location can stay. Pumps that have failed or lines that dump onto a sidewalk or into a wall cavity get rerouted. In a converted garage the drain often needs a new path to the exterior or to a laundry sink. All of this is inspected before we commit to reusing anything. What we cannot reuse we replace so the new system starts with clean, code compliant connections.

What replacement day looks like start to finish

Before anyone shows up with tools, the homeowner decides three things. First, where each indoor head will sit. Height, distance from corners, and airflow across the room all matter. In an addition the original location may have been chosen for convenience rather than comfort. Second, how many zones the new system will serve. One head for one room is simple. Two or three heads let you condition an addition plus a garage conversion or a sunroom without tying them to the main house ducts. Third, where the outdoor condenser will sit. Clearance from walls, windows, and neighbors, plus a path for the line set that is as short and protected as possible, drives that choice. We walk the site with you so those decisions are made with the actual walls and yard in view.

On the day itself we start by isolating power, recovering refrigerant from the existing Haier unit, and unbolting the indoor head and outdoor condenser. The old equipment leaves the property. If the pad, penetration, and circuit are staying, we protect them while we work. New line set is run, brazed or flared as the equipment requires, insulated, and pressure tested. The new indoor heads go on their brackets, level, with the condensate pitched correctly. The outdoor unit is set, leveled, and connected. We pull vacuum, charge, and start the system. Electrical connections at the disconnect and the heads are made up to code. We run each zone, check temperatures, and show you how the controls work. Cleanup includes hauling away the old unit and leaving the work area swept.

A typical one or two head job finishes in a single day if the decisions were made ahead of time and the existing path is usable. Three heads or a difficult line set route, such as through a finished attic or around a masonry chimney, can push into a second day. Weather in Central Texas can also slow outdoor work. Anything non standard is quoted separately before any work starts. What to ask any installer, and when to keep the old unit

Before you hire anyone, ask whether they are a TDLR licensed HVAC and electrical contractor, not just a helper with a truck. Ask how they will recover the old refrigerant and dispose of the existing Haier equipment. Ask whether the quote includes a new line set or assumes reuse, and what happens if the old copper fails a pressure test. Ask who pulls the permit if one is needed. Ask how they will protect floors and walls in an occupied house. Ask what the homeowner must decide before the crew arrives, head location, zone count, condenser placement. Keeping the existing equipment is the better decision when a single inexpensive part will restore function, when the indoor head is already in the right place, and when the electrical and drainage are already correct. It is also better when the space itself is a poor candidate for ductless. A whole house that already has ducts may be served more simply by repairing or replacing the central system. A tiny closet or a room with no exterior wall for a line set may not be worth a mini split. We will say that. Long hot summers make cooling important, but they do not make every room a mini split job. Short mild winters mean heating is secondary here, so a unit that still cools well can be left alone even if heat is weak.

Questions people actually ask

Can you reuse my existing line set when you replace the unit?

Sometimes. We inspect the copper for size, condition, and cleanliness. Flare nuts and insulation often fail first. If the line set is the right diameter, holds a pressure test, and can be flushed, we may keep it. In most replacements we run new insulated copper because the old refrigerant and oil may not be compatible and because sun damaged insulation is common on outdoor runs in Central Texas. The decision is made on site. Reuse, when it is sound, can reduce the work. When it is not, new lines are part of the flat price for a standard job.

What if my outdoor pad is cracked or too small?

Then it is quoted as extra work before we start. A cracked pad can be replaced or a new composite pad set. If the condenser needs to move for clearance or noise, we quote the new location, the extra line set, and any electrical extension. Standard pricing assumes the existing pad is usable. We will not set a new unit on an unsafe base. In older Austin lots the pad is sometimes against a fence that now violates clearance. Moving it is common and is priced up front so you can choose.

Is a mini split the right choice for every room in an older house?

No. If the house already has a working ducted system, extending a run or repairing the central unit is often simpler and cheaper. A room with no exterior wall, or a space so small that a head would blow directly on a bed, is a poor fit. Converted garages and additions without ducts are the usual good candidates in Central Texas. We will tell you when ductless is the wrong answer. Keeping the existing Haier unit with a repair is also better when the symptoms are minor and the rest of the installation is sound.

How long will I be without cooling?

On a standard one or two head replacement we aim to have the new system running the same day we remove the old one. We recover refrigerant, swap equipment, pull vacuum, and start up before we leave. Three heads or a hard line set route can take a second day. We schedule so the house is not left open during the hottest part of a Central Texas summer if we can avoid it.
