Those are materials and labor together, wired to code by a TDLR licensed contractor. Anything non standard gets quoted first, before a single tool comes out of the truck: a very long line set, an electrical panel that needs work, a difficult mount, a roof or masonry penetration, disposal of the old equipment. How a Failing Unit Gets Your Attention

The most common call starts with a room that will not hold temperature. The indoor head runs constantly but the air coming out feels lukewarm, not cold. The case for replacement strengthens when the compressor itself has failed or when the system has a refrigerant leak that is not repairable at a single accessible joint. Repairing a leak inside a coil or replacing a compressor often costs enough that putting that same money toward a new outdoor unit and a matched indoor head starts to look rational. When the failed equipment also uses an older refrigerant type that is no longer common, the cost to recharge after a repair can shift the math further. There are times when neither path is obvious. If the existing line set is the correct diameter for the new equipment and is free of kinks, corrosion, or internal contamination from a past compressor burnout, it can stay. If the sizes do not match or the old refrigerant left residue that cannot be flushed, new lines get pulled through the same penetration. The electrical disconnect box on the wall near the outdoor unit stays. The circuit from the main panel to that disconnect also stays, provided the breaker rating matches the new equipment requirements.

The indoor mounting bracket is almost never reused. Different indoor heads use different bracket geometries, and the new unit comes with its own plate. The old bracket gets unbolted and the new one goes onto the same wall, covering the old screw holes when possible. The condensate route may carry over fully. If the existing drain goes through the wall and down to a splash pad or into a plumbing vent, the new unit can often tie into that same path. When the old drain was a gravity line running inside a wall cavity, the condition of that tubing gets inspected before anyone assumes it stays.

The Replacement Day, Start to Finish

The crew arrives knowing the scope. The old refrigerant gets recovered into a cylinder, not vented. The indoor head comes off the wall, leaving the mounting bracket, wiring, pipes, and the wall penetration exposed. The outdoor unit gets disconnected from power, the line set is cut at the outdoor connections, and the old unit is lifted off the pad and loaded out. The line set gets inspected and either cleaned for reuse or pulled out and replaced with new copper pulled through the existing penetration. The electrical whip from the disconnect to the outdoor unit gets replaced because the old one is rarely the right length for the new unit.

The new indoor bracket goes up, leveled carefully, and the new head is mounted. The line set connections are brazed with nitrogen flowing inside to prevent oxidation. The drain line is connected and tested by pouring water through the indoor unit pan. The system is pressurized with dry nitrogen, held to check for leaks, evacuated with a vacuum pump to a deep micron level, and then the outdoor unit valves are opened to release the factory refrigerant charge. Run tests follow, measuring airflow, temperature split across the indoor coil, and current draw on the compressor. The crew cleans the work area, removes all packaging and the old equipment, and leaves only the new system running.

Before any of this happens, you make three decisions. First, where the indoor head sits. Often it stays where it was, but sometimes a homeowner wants a different wall to better serve a rearranged room or a converted space. Second, zone count. If the old unit served one room but you have since enclosed a garage or finished an attic, adding a head changes the job scope. Third, outdoor unit placement. The pad location usually stays, but if landscaping has grown over it or a new deck blocks airflow, moving it a few feet matters.
