Those are materials and labor together, wired to code by a TDLR licensed contractor. Anything non standard gets quoted first, before a single tool comes out of the truck: a very long line set, an electrical panel that needs work, a difficult mount, a roof or masonry penetration, disposal of the old equipment. You hear the number before we start, not after.

Why an existing unit brings homeowners to this page

Parts that can remain and parts that must be new

The concrete or plastic pad under the outdoor unit can often stay. If it is level and large enough and has good airflow we leave it. The wall penetration can usually be reused if the height is practical and the wall is sound. We inspect the flashing so water stays out. The line set is frequently replaced because the copper may be the wrong diameter or the flares may not match the new valves. When reuse is impossible we install new insulated lines and quote that work in advance. In long Austin summers a leaking or undersized line set will show up as poor cooling even with new indoor and outdoor pieces. We therefore test and measure before deciding. The homeowner is shown the condition of the existing copper and the reason it can or cannot stay.

The disconnect at the outdoor unit and the branch circuit that supplies it can frequently be kept. Code requires the breaker and the conductors to match the new condenser nameplate. If they already do, and the disconnect is in good condition, we leave them. Many older Central Texas houses have an undersized circuit or a disconnect that is no longer acceptable. Then we add a new homerun from the panel or we change the disconnect. That work is priced before we begin. The indoor mounting bracket almost never carries over. Each new indoor head uses its own back plate with a different screw pattern and a different drain stub. We take the old bracket off the wall, repair the drywall or the plaster if the holes do not line up, and mount the new plate so the head sits level and the condensate can leave.

The condensate route is inspected on every job. A gravity drain that still has the proper slope from the indoor head to the outside or to a floor drain can stay. Flexible hose that has become brittle, a pump that no longer lifts the water, or a drain that has been run without a trap or a cleanout will be changed. In a converted garage the drain often exits through the same wall penetration as the lines. We make sure the new head can use that path or we drill a new low point if needed. Nothing about the old Midea equipment is assumed to be compatible. We treat every piece, pad, penetration, lines, power, bracket, and drain, as something to verify on site. Replacement day and the choices you make first

Next we mount the new indoor back plates, run or reuse the line set, make the electrical connections at the disconnect, and set the new condenser on the pad. Vacuum, charge, and start up follow. A standard replacement of one indoor head and its matching outdoor unit, using the existing pad, an existing wall penetration that we can reuse, and an existing circuit that already meets code, is $1,500. That figure includes the new indoor and outdoor equipment, the labor to remove the old Midea unit, the labor to hang the new head, connect the lines, evacuate, charge, start, and haul the old pieces away. Two indoor heads with one outdoor unit, same conditions, is $2,500. Three indoor heads is $3,500. Those three numbers are the only prices we publish. They assume a straightforward swap in a typical Austin or Central Texas house, addition, or converted garage. If the line set must be replaced, if a new circuit must be pulled, if the pad is broken, or if a condensate pump is required, those items are quoted separately before work starts.

Nothing else is hidden in the flat numbers. Permits, if the city of Austin or the county requires one for the electrical or the mechanical change, are extra and are listed on the pre work quote. Moving the outdoor unit to a new pad location, fishing new wire through finished walls, or opening a second wall penetration are also extra. What to ask an installer and when to keep the existing unit

Ask any installer, including us, whether they are a TDLR licensed contractor and whether the electrical work will be done to the current code. Ask who will pull the permit if one is required. Ask whether they will recover the refrigerant from the old unit instead of venting it. Ask how they will handle the wall penetration so it stays watertight. Ask what happens if the existing line set cannot be reused. Ask for a written list of what is included in the price and what is extra. Those questions apply no matter who you call. They protect you in an older house where hidden rot, undersized wire, or a blocked drain can appear after the old Midea equipment is already gone. A clear answer on each point is more useful than a low first number.

Keeping the existing equipment is the better decision when a single repair will restore reliable cooling for a cost well below the replacement figures above, and when the indoor head is still in a location that serves the room. It is also better when the house electrical service cannot accept another condenser without a costly panel change, or when the space is used so little that even a window unit would be enough. In a mild Central Texas winter the heating function of a mini split is rarely the reason to replace. Can the existing line set stay when the indoor and outdoor units are replaced?

Sometimes. We measure the diameter, inspect the insulation, and check the flares and the oil condition. If the copper matches what the new equipment needs and is free of damage, we can reuse it and keep the price at the flat figure. If it does not match, we quote new lines before work starts. In older Austin houses the original run is often the wrong size or has been patched. Reusing a bad line set would only recreate the cooling problems you already have. What should I decide before replacement day?

Decide the exact wall for each indoor head, how many zones you need, and the final spot for the outdoor unit. Those three choices control condensate routing, line length, noise, and whether we can reuse the pad and the penetration. We help you choose on a visit before the work is scheduled. Changing your mind after the old Midea unit is removed costs extra time and money. Also decide whether anyone will be home. We need access to the indoor spaces and a place to set the recovered refrigerant tank and the new equipment. Having those answers ready keeps the day short.

Is a ductless system always the right replacement in an addition or garage?

No. If the main house already has a central system that can be extended with a modest amount of duct, that path may give more even temperatures and fewer indoor heads to maintain. If the garage or addition is used only occasionally, a window unit or even no mechanical cooling may be enough.
