Those are materials and labor together, wired to code by a TDLR licensed contractor. Anything non standard gets quoted first, before a single tool comes out of the truck: a very long line set, an electrical panel that needs work, a difficult mount, a roof or masonry penetration, disposal of the old equipment. You hear the number before we start, not after.
What Brings a Homeowner to This Point
The call often starts the same way. The thermostat is set to 74 but the house reads 80, and the outdoor unit runs for two minutes, shuts off, then tries again ten minutes later. That short cycling makes the rooms feel muggy because the system never runs long enough to pull humidity out of the air, a real problem in our hot, damp summers. Other homeowners notice a loud compressor, a rattle that was not there last year, or a fan that sounds like it is struggling against itself.

An honest walk around the property usually turns up a few extra clues. Some rooms in an older Austin house might never have cooled well even when the central system was new. Leaky ducts in a hot attic, a poorly insulated addition, or a converted garage that was never properly conditioned all add to the load. A replacement conversation is rarely just about swapping a box. Repair Versus Replace, without the Hype

The math shifts when the compressor has failed, the evaporator coil is leaking, or the control board and fan motor have both reached the end of their life at the same time. A mini split is not the answer for every floor plan. In a house with a tight, well sealed duct system that delivers even temperatures to every room, keeping a central system often makes more sense. But many Austin homes have ducts that were undersized from the start, or they run through attics that hit 140 degrees, bleeding capacity before cool air reaches the bedrooms. In those settings, moving to a ductless solution addresses the duct problem itself rather than patching it.
What Carries Over from the Old Install
The outdoor concrete pad the old Carrier condenser sits on today is often reusable as is. Those pads are typically level, sized for a reasonable footprint, and already located away from bedroom windows. The wall penetration where the existing refrigerant lines and control wiring pass through the siding or brick is another asset that usually stays. We can run new line sets and communication cable through that same opening, sealing it fresh against weather and pests instead of punching a second hole in the wall.
The electrical disconnect box mounted near the outdoor unit and the dedicated circuit from the panel are both evaluated on site. In many cases the disconnect and breaker rating are suitable for a new ductless outdoor unit without any change. The wiring is checked for conductor size and condition, and where it meets code we leave it in place. The old Carrier mounting bracket, however, almost never transfers. The new outdoor unit will typically require its own manufacturer specific bracket or stand, set on the existing pad or nearby.
What does not carry over is the line set, the indoor coil, the supply and return ductwork, the thermostat wiring bundle, and the blower assembly. The copper tubing running to the old evaporator is typically the wrong diameter for a ductless system, and reusing old lines risks introducing contaminants into a new compressor. The condensate route is something we examine early. A gravity drain through the old furnace cabinet is no longer relevant, so we plan a new condensate path either by gravity through the wall or with a small pump, depending on where the indoor head is placed.
What Replacement Day Actually Looks Like
Before we arrive, you make just a few core decisions. The first is head placement. A wall mounted indoor unit high on an exterior wall typically works best, blowing across the room rather than toward a seating area. The second is zone count. A single head in a main living space can cost effectively solve most of the discomfort, while a second head in a primary bedroom handles hot nights. A third head often serves a converted garage, an addition that never got proper airflow, or a second floor room that always runs warm. The third decision is condenser location. Often it stays right where the old Carrier unit sits, on the existing pad, keeping the outdoor footprint the same.
The day itself begins with removing the old equipment. We recover any remaining refrigerant and disconnect the high and low voltage wiring. The indoor air handler, coil, and any duct sections we are abandoning come out, and we close off old duct openings so they do not become air leaks into unconditioned space. The outdoor unit is unbolted and removed from the pad. All of the old equipment is loaded for proper recycling, and we clean the work area before starting the new installation.
With the old gear gone, we mount the indoor head on the wall you chose, level it, and run a slim duct or covered line set bundle through the existing or new wall penetration to the outdoor unit sitting on its bracket. The condensate line is routed discreetly, either exiting at the base of the wall or feeding into a quiet pump hidden inside a soffit or closet. The electrical connection is made at the existing disconnect, the circuit is commissioned, and we run the system in both modes to confirm charge, airflow, and drainage. Most single head replacements are done by late afternoon, with the house already cooling and no ductwork to clean up afterward.
Flat Pricing and What Gets Quoted Separately
Our pricing for a complete ductless replacement is straightforward. One indoor head with one outdoor unit, including all materials, labor, mounting, line set, condensate drainage, the electrical hookup at the existing disconnect, and commissioning, is $1,500. Two indoor heads on a multi zone system are $2,500. Three indoor heads are $3,500. These prices include removing the old Carrier equipment and properly recycling it, sealing the abandoned duct openings, and cleaning up the work site. There is no hidden line item charge for a permit, no added fee for a pad that already exists.
Several things fall outside the flat price because they depend on your specific house and your choices. A new dedicated circuit run from the panel to a disconnect location where one does not exist is quoted before any work begins. Upgrading an old disconnect box that does not meet current code is quoted the same way. If the outdoor pad is cracked and sinking and needs to be repoured, that is a separate line item. An extended line set run beyond the standard length included, or a condensate pump where gravity drainage is not possible, is also quoted ahead of time so you see every dollar before we start.

If a room has no exterior wall to mount a head on and would require a ceiling cassette and extensive attic work, the labor cost may push the project past the point where a straightforward ducted replacement makes more sense. Questions to Ask Any Installer and When to Keep What You Have

In an unusually long and narrow shotgun style house, one head may not push air deeply into the back rooms, and you need to weigh adding a second head versus a ducted solution. A mini split is also the wrong tool when a home already has a tight, well balanced duct system that just needs a new outdoor unit, or when the budget calls for the most basic low cost swap possible with no changes to the layout.
Keeping the existing Carrier system is the better decision when a licensed technician can pinpoint a single electrical or mechanical repair, the refrigerant circuit is intact, and the unit is well short of a typical replacement age. Add up the repair cost, the age of the other major parts, and the cooling you are actually getting in every room today. If the numbers land in favor of one more repair and the ducts are not the root cause of your uneven temperatures, we will say so. Can I really replace a central Carrier system with a single mini split head?
For a lot of Austin floor plans, yes. Many older homes here are one story and open from the living area into the kitchen, with bedrooms clustered nearby. One well placed wall head in that main space, sized correctly, can carry much of the cooling load and reach hallway areas surprisingly well. You lose air delivery into closets and bathrooms, but those spaces rarely determine comfort. The bigger question is whether you need a second head for a bedroom that gets direct afternoon sun or for a converted garage that was never comfortable with ducts anyway. We measure the space and discuss coverage honestly before you commit to one versus two heads.
What happens to my old ducts when you remove the Carrier unit?
We seal off any duct openings that connect to unconditioned space so your attic or crawl space is not pouring hot humid air into the house through abandoned registers. If the old supply registers are in the floor or ceiling, we cap them from below or above and leave the visible grille in place so you do not have a hole to patch in the flooring. In cases where an entire room relied on that duct run and is not getting a new indoor head, we talk about that upfront so there is no surprise about how that space will be cooled. Duct removal is partial, targeted, and done with sealing as the priority.
Do I need a completely new electrical circuit, or does the old one work?
Many Carrier condensers installed in the last decade or two sit on a dedicated circuit with a disconnect that meets the requirements for a modern ductless outdoor unit as well. We check the wire gauge for the length of run and the breaker rating at the panel. Where those match the new unit’s specifications and the disconnect is in good shape, we reuse them. If the disconnect box is rusted through or the wiring is undersized or aluminum and not rated for the load, we quote a new circuit or disconnect upgrade before starting. That way you know the exact added cost and the reason for it.
Is a mini split a bad idea if I have a two story house?
Not necessarily, but it changes the design. A single head downstairs will not reliably cool upstairs bedrooms in most two story Austin homes because hot air rises and stairwells do not act as good supply ducts. A multi zone setup with a head in the upstairs hallway or in the primary bedroom can work well, while a third head addresses a problem room. The real drawback is the line set routing for the upper floor heads, which may require an exterior chase or running lines through a closet.
