Those are materials and labor together, wired to code by a TDLR licensed contractor. Anything non standard gets quoted first, before a single tool comes out of the truck: a very long line set, an electrical panel that needs work, a difficult mount, a roof or masonry penetration, disposal of the old equipment. You hear the number before we start, not after.

What Usually Brings a Homeowner to This Page

The most common reason Austin homeowners call us is that their existing mini split is not cooling like it used to. The air coming out may feel warm, or the room never reaches the set temperature. In many cases the unit runs for a few minutes then shuts off, a pattern called short cycling. This can happen with any equipment over time and is not specific to one brand.

Another frequent complaint is noise. Indoor heads may rattle, hiss, or click loudly when the fan runs. Outdoor units sometimes vibrate against the wall or produce a humming sound that travels through the house. Age is also a factor. Many mini splits in Austin were installed ten or fifteen years ago in additions or converted garages. When a repair quote comes back high, homeowners start asking whether it makes sense to put more money into an older system.

Repair Versus Replace: How to Decide Honestly

A good rule is that if the system is less than five years old and has a single failed part, repair is usually the smarter money. A bad capacitor, a leaking refrigerant line fitting, or a stuck reversing valve can often be fixed for a few hundred dollars. In those cases replacing the whole system would be wasteful.

Once the unit is older than eight to ten years and the repair involves the compressor, main circuit board, or a refrigerant leak in the coil, replacement becomes the better choice. Older systems use refrigerants that are phased out or expensive to source. You may also find that parts are no longer available. In Austin's long hot summers, you do not want to wait weeks for a backordered board. If you have already paid for one major repair in the last year, the next one is likely around the corner.

What Carries Over to the New System and What Does Not

Some parts of your old installation can be reused. The outdoor concrete pad or wall bracket usually stays. The wall penetration where the line set passes through is often reused. The electrical disconnect and the dedicated circuit from your breaker panel can remain if they are in good condition and sized correctly. The condensate drain route through the wall is also reusable.

What must be replaced is the line set, the copper tubing that carries refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units. Old line sets can contain moisture, debris, or the wrong type of oil for new equipment. The mounting bracket behind the indoor head is typically removed and replaced because hole patterns differ. The indoor head itself is always new. The outdoor unit is always new. Nothing that holds refrigerant or moves air is carried over from the old system.

What Replacement Day Looks Like and What You Decide Beforehand

On the day of replacement, our crew arrives in the morning. We start by removing the old indoor head, outdoor unit, and line set. The wall bracket and outdoor pad are inspected and reused if sound. New line set is run through the existing wall penetration. We mount the new indoor head on a fresh bracket, connect the line set, wire the disconnect, and pull a vacuum on the system to remove moisture and air. Then we open the refrigerant valves and test the system.

Before we arrive, you need to decide where the indoor head will be placed. It should be on a wall that allows good airflow across the room, not behind furniture or above a tall cabinet. You also choose how many indoor heads you want. If your old system had one head in a converted garage but you now want cooling in an adjacent room, that is the time to add a second or third zone. The outdoor condenser location must be on firm level ground with clearance for airflow and service access.

Flat Pricing and What Is Included

We charge flat rates that include all materials and labor for a standard installation. One indoor head is $1,500. Two indoor heads are $2,500. Three indoor heads are $3,500. These prices cover the new ductless system, new line set, new wall bracket, electrical connection at the disconnect, condensate drain setup, vacuum and refrigerant charge, and removal and disposal of your old equipment. There are no hidden fees for a standard job.

Non standard work is quoted separately before any work begins. Examples include running a new electrical circuit from the panel, upgrading the disconnect, repairing or replacing the outdoor pad, patching drywall, or running line set through an attic or crawl space that requires extra labor. We walk through the job with you beforehand and give you a written quote for any additional items. If the job is standard, the flat rate is the final price.

What to Ask Any Installer Before You Hire Them

Ask whether they are a licensed contractor with TDLR. Ask if they carry liability and workers compensation insurance. Ask how they handle the old line set: do they flush it or replace it? The correct answer is replace. Ask what brand and model they plan to install and whether parts will be available locally. Ask for a written description of what is included and what could be extra. Ask how long the job will take and how many workers will be on site.

Keeping your existing equipment is the better decision when the unit is relatively young, the repair is minor, and you are happy with how it performed before the problem started. If the unit is cooling well, quiet, and the repair is under a few hundred dollars, do not replace it. Also, if your home has a room that a mini split cannot serve well, like a large open living area with high ceilings, a conventional ducted system may be a better fit. Can you replace my Mitsubishi unit even though you are not affiliated with them?

Yes. ATX Mini Split King is an independent contractor. We remove and replace any brand of mini split, including Mitsubishi. We do not claim any training or endorsement from them. The new system we install is a different manufacturer and is not compared to your old equipment. Our work is done to code by a TDLR licensed contractor.

Do I need to buy the new unit separately or do you supply everything?

We supply the complete new ductless system, line set, bracket, and all materials. The flat rates of $1,500 for one head, $2,500 for two heads, and $3,500 for three heads include the equipment, labor, and disposal of your old unit. You do not need to purchase anything yourself.

What if my old line set is longer than normal or runs through an attic?

Standard installations assume a line set run of up to 25 feet with accessible routing. If your line set is longer, runs through a finished attic, or requires extra labor to access, we will quote that separately before starting. We always walk through the job and provide a written estimate for any non standard conditions.

How long does the replacement take?

A typical one head replacement takes four to six hours. Two head systems take six to eight hours. Three head systems may take a full day. The crew will give you a more specific timeline when they see the job. We work efficiently to minimize downtime, especially during Austin's hot summer months.

What should I do if my current unit is still working but I am worried about its age?

If the unit is cooling fine, is quiet, and has not needed repairs, there is no reason to replace it. Keep using it and set aside a small savings for future repairs. When a major repair is needed or performance drops, then consider replacement. We do not push unnecessary replacements.
